Major Track Project to Impact Rock Island Line to Joliet
The project will begin Aug. 17 and go through Oct. 25.

As part of Metra’s continued efforts to maintain and improve the quality and reliability of its service, a major tie replacement and track resurfacing project will begin Monday, Aug. 17 on Metra’s Rock Island Line to Joliet, according to a release from the city. Riders should note that construction schedules will be in effect for midday and weekend trains.
A construction schedule will be in effect from Aug. 17 through Oct. 25 for midday trains on the Rock Island Line and riders should expect delays of up to ten minutes enroute to their final destination. The construction schedule is available online at metrarail.com. Due to the nature of the project, some rush hour trains may also experience delays due to slower operating speeds in work zones.
Riders are encouraged to review the construction schedule for more detailed information on the trains impacted by the project.

Metra forces will be replacing 17,500 ties and resurfacing track over a nearly 25-mile stretch of the Rock Island Line between Blue Island and Joliet. Crews will be working seven days a week, with most of the work occurring between the weekday morning and evening rush hours to minimize impacts to passenger service.
“This project is a part of the regular maintenance necessary to keep our rail lines in the best condition possible. Tracks and ties are the foundation of the railroad and must be maintained or replaced on a regular basis,” said Metra Executive Director/CEO Don Orseno.

Communities along the route should be aware that they will also be impacted by noise associated with the construction equipment, as well as the need for trains passing through the construction area to sound their horns to alert the work crews.
