Man Who Lost Dog One Step Closer to Finding Her

The dog's collar and leash have been returned and another dog may be able to track her down.

Walker Bayas, the man whose dog went missing weeks ago and who was having trouble communicating with the courier, has now received the dog’s collar and leash and will be able to start a hunt for his beloved pet, KD.

Bayas said he received the collar and leash over the weekend and it’s now in the hands of Connie Cunningham, manager of the Woodlawn Canine Academy.

Cunningham will use the collar and leash to try to get another dog, Echo, to catch KD’s scent to track her down.

“We went to the forest preserve and we had Echo do a little trial run to make sure he was gong to be able to pick up the scent from the collar and leash,” Cunningham said.

Echo has been shown and is allowed to smell the leash and collar. For the trial run, they walked through the forest preserve and occasionally dropped the collar and leash. It was eventually hidden in a bathroom and Echo was able to pick up the scent.

“We then drove out to a couple of areas where people said the dog was sighted,” Cunningham said.

But with KD having been missing for several weeks now, it’s possible the scent is long gone. However, Bayas remains hopeful.

“I’m trying to stay as positive as possible,” Bayas said. “That’s all I can really say about that.”

Cunningham said that despite the length of time that’s passed, it’s still possible for Echo to pick up the scent, although it does weaken over time.

“It’s hard, but it’s there,” Cunningham said.

Despite everything, Bayas said he is still getting tips from people who may have seen KD.

Large 11x17 fliers have been put up to publicize KD’s disappearance even more, but Bayas said he’s heard that some people have been ripping them down.

“I don’t know why somebody would rip these down,” Bayas said. “Maybe out of spite or they’re just a jerk, but it’s a really mean thing to do.”

Bayas’ dog went missing near the middle of June when she got off her leash at a truck stop near the I-55 Great Chicago Truck Plaza and Route 53.

Bayas was having trouble communicating with the courier and said he was just looking to get the collar back so another dog can track KD’s scent.

With both the collar and leash back, hopefully KD can be returned to her rightful owner.
