Masturbating School Janitor With Sex Toy Freed From Prison

The Joliet man was released from prison after Lisa Madigan's Office intervened on the case.

JOLIET, IL - There was crying in the courtroom from Ryan M. Thompson's family members on May 1 when Will County Circuit Judge David Carlson sentenced the 28-year-old Joliet voyeur to the maximum term of five years imprisonment. Thompson had previously pleaded guilty to two felony crimes of unauthorized videotaping of several girls at Chaney Monge School in Crest Hill.

Patch has previously reported that Thompson, as the school janitor, was sneaking into his school building's attic to watch and attempt to videotape several adolescent girls disrobe for gym class.

A Crest Hill Police detective testified that the cellphone evidence confiscated from the defendant found videos showing Thompson masturbating into a sexual toy while he was lurking inside the school's attic.

But as of this week, Thompson is out of custody. He's back in Joliet.

Lawyers for Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan had notified the Will County judge that he needed to re-sentence Thompson, because the terms of the judge's original sentence could not be met by Illinois Department of Corrections prison officials.

At the time of the May 1 sentencing, Judge Carlson ordered Thompson, while in prison, "to receive sex offender counseling," according to a court record signed by the judge on Sept. 24.

On Oct. 8, Dr. Thomas Holt filed an affidavit in Thompson's criminal case noting that Holt is employed as director of the Illinois Department of Corrections sex-offender treatment program located at the Big Muddy River Correctional Center in Ina, IL.

"Other correctional facilities including the Stateville Correctional Center are neither equipped nor staffed to treat sex-offending inmates," Holt wrote the judge.

Thompson was serving his prison term during these past several months at the Stateville Correctional Center's Northern Reception and Classification Center, awaiting transfer to Big Muddy, court records stated.

"Due to Thompson's current location as well as an extended wait-list of inmates currently seeking sex-offender treatment evaluations, IDOC will be unable to complete a sex-offender treatment status report for Thompson prior to November 5, 2018," Holt wrote the judge in October.

Lisa Madigan's Attorney General's Office went to bat for convicted felon Ryan Thompson. Now, he is no longer in prison.

On Nov. 13, Judge Carlson entered into Will County's court record the following notations: "The Attorney General's Motion, filed on behalf of the Department of Corrections, to vacate court order entered Sept. 24 is vacated. The defendant is remanded back to the custody of the Will County Adult Detention Facility."

This week, Judge Carlson reluctantly carried out the re-sentencing for Thompson.

The convicted felon was re-sentenced to 30 months of sex offender probation and given credit for spending a total of 219 days incarcerated.

Incidentally, Thompson's name and face and information about his crimes will not be appearing on any state registry for convicted sex offenders.

As was pointed out earlier this year by the judge, the crime of unauthorized videotaping is not considered a sex crime that requires the offender to register with the state of Illinois.

"It's absolutely insane ... unless people really, really look for it, they won't know what you did," Carlson told the defendant at the May 1 sentencing.

At Thompson's sentencing, Judge Carlson informed everyone in the courtroom that Thompson "is a good candidate to re-offend in the future."

During the past two weeks Thompson was being housed at the Will County Jail awaiting his re-sentencing before Judge Carlson. Then, around dinner time on Tuesday, Nov. 27, the correctional guards let him out at 5:36 p.m.

Ryan B. Thompson was free to go home.

According to the Illinois DOC, the former Chaney Monge janitor also has one tattoo on his left upper arm to draw inner strength.

His tattoo declares "IN FAMILY - TRUST."
