JOLIET, IL — Many of the Joliet area's popular restaurants have a signature item. Merichka's is famous for its poorboys. Chicken-N-Spice has the breast chunks. On West Jefferson Street, if you visit Mr. Submarine, you better get the garlic fries.

During the past year, as a new Joliet restaurant, K Ribs BBQ has tried to find its niche downtown. The one-of-a-kind Korean-style restaurant on North Chicago Street began celebrating its one-year anniversary on Oct. 15.

As part of the celebration, K Ribs added a tasty new Korean-style BBQ chicken sub to the menu for $4.99. (For $5.99 you can order pork and for $6.99 beef.)

Unexpectedly, the Korean-style BBQ chicken sub has been a huge hit with customers, K Ribs BBQ owner Dillon Kim told Patch this week.

As a result, K Ribs now intends to make it a permanent fixture on the menu, Kim said.

"People, when they taste it, they say they are very surprised," Kim said. "We thought we would just have it for the anniversary, but it's doing very well."

K Ribs is open Tuesday-Thursday 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. K Ribs has a city liquor license to sell several selections of beers and wines.

"I love it downtown," Kim told Patch. "I wish there were even more restaurants coming in downtown."

K Ribs also delivers within a 5-mile radius of downtown Joliet. The restaurant also does a significant portion of its sales from carryout orders, Kim added.
