Pillow Held Against Woman's Head In Buell Ave. Bedroom: Police

During an argument in the bedroom, Garry Potter struck the woman in the face, which caused her to fall back on the bed, Joliet police said.

JOLIET, IL — Joliet police have arrested 48-year-old Garry Potter in connection with multiple allegations of domestic violence, including one incident in which Potter held a pillow against the woman's head inside his bedroom, according to the arrest reports.

Potter comes from the 400 block of Buell Avenue, and he remained incarcerated Thursday, unable to post 10 percent of his $25,000 bail. On Wednesday, Joliet officers hauled Potter off to the police station in handcuffs. He's being charged with aggravated domestic battery, four counts of domestic battery, one count of interference with the reporting of domestic violence, plus he also faced an outstanding Will County arrest warrant.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English outlined the following events leading up to Potter's arrest:

  • First, back around 6:20 p.m. on June 2, Joliet police were sent to Potter's apartment house on Buell Avenue for a domestic disturbance.
  • During an argument in a bedroom, police said Potter struck a woman in the face, which caused her to fall back on the bed. According to authorities, Potter then climbed on top of her and placed a pillow over her face, making it difficult to breathe.
  • The attack was interrupted by an adult family member, and officials said Potter ran from the apartment. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate Potter
  • Less than an hour later, officers were called back to the same apartment for another disturbance. During the second incident, police said Potter entered his apartment through a window, at which time he again attacked the victim, pushing her into a wall.
  • The victim attempted to call 911, however authorities say Potter grabbed the phone from her hand. Potter then threw a liquor bottle at his victim, striking her arm and causing a laceration.
  • Potter fled the area, and Joliet police were not able to find him.
  • The victim refused medical assistance.
  • On July 7, Joliet police obtained a warrant to arrest Potter.
  • Then, on Wednesday, around 10:45 a.m., Joliet officers spotted Potter walking outside in the area of Oneida Street and Pine Street. They put him in custody and realized he also had an active Will County warrant for failing to appear in court on previous traffic charges.
