Racial Slurs Yelled At Guests Inside Joliet's Quality Inn: Cops

Gwen Shawmeker, 55, of Joliet, was arrested at the Quality Inn on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer.

JOLIET, IL — A 55-year-old Joliet woman was arrested Saturday night by Joliet police after she yelled several racial slurs at the guests of the Quality Inn, 135 South Larkin Ave., according to police.

Gwen Shawmeker was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and obstructing a peace officer. The incident inside the Quality Inn happened around 9:30 p.m.

"Officers determined that Shawmeker was intoxicated and was in the lobby of the hotel yelling racial slurs at other hotel guests, prompting staff to contact 911," police spokesman Dwayne English indicated.

When officers tried talking with Shawmeker, she tried to push past them, prompting officers to take Shawmeker into custody after a brief struggle.

Shawmeker was released from the Joliet police station on an I-bond, police reports reflect.
