“We’re encouraging people to step outside and give cold weather camping a try,” said Jen Guest, the Forest Preserve District’s recreation coordinator. “Embrace the cold while enjoying a view of nature at night.”

The short program allows participants to try overnight camping in a small group with an experienced leader, she added.

“Trips like this give people the opportunity to try something new and camp safely in a group when maybe their friends or spouses do not enjoy camping. And it gives them a chance to meet new people who also enjoy the outdoors."

On Friday night, campers will cook hot dogs and s’mores over an open campfire and then go on a guided 3.5-mile night hike through the forest along the DuPage River. After sleeping in the crisp winter air, the group will wake up to hot coffee and doughnuts around the fire.

Camping gear will not be provided for this program, so bring a tent, sleeping bag, flashlight and warm clothing.
