Second I-80 Crash Victim To Die Was FedEx Driver

Illinois State Police issued an updated statement late Thursday morning.

JOLIET, IL - The Illinois State Police on Thursday confirmed that the second motorist to die as a result of Tuesday morning's Interstate 80 motor vehicle mishap near Larkin Avenue was also a FedEx driver. LaGrange resident Jugoslav Djordjevic, 49, died on Wednesday from his injuries sustained in the crash, state police said. His truck had broken down near mile marker 129 in Joliet. A second FedEx driver responded to Interstate 80 to help the disabled motorist, and she was killed at the scene. Sami Guzick, 50, of Joliet was struck by the out-of-control semi driven by Chicagoan Douglass Norfleet, 46.

On Thursday, the Illinois State Police announced that Norfleet is being charged with improper lane usage and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Around 6:10 a.m., Norfleet's eastbound International Truck Tractor semi trailer veered off I-80 and into the right shoulder, striking both FedEx trucks and Guzick who was nearby, police said. The fiery collision caused police to shut down Interstate 80 for more than 10 hours on Tuesday to put out the fire, clean-up debris and reconstruct the crash as part of the investigation.

The state police reported on Tuesday night that Norfleet also suffered serious injuries in the crash. An update on his condition wasn't immediately available as of Thursday afternoon.
