St. Coletta's Celebrates 75 Years of Service

St. Coletta’s of Illinois commemorated its 75th anniversary of service with the annual Caritas Benefit on November 9. Nearly 200 parents, participants, staff members, community partners, and supporters attended the celebration, raising crucial funds for St. Coletta’s ongoing mission to serve individuals with developmental disabilities and ensure they receive compassionate and comprehensive support.

In her address, CEO Heather Benedick reflected on the history and dedication that continues to define St. Coletta's mission. "Everyone here tonight plays an essential role," Benedick shared, "from the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi who founded St. Coletta's 75 years ago to our dedicated staff, board members, and donors. We all bring our God-given gifts to this mission." Guests enjoyed viewing historical images displayed throughout the room, illustrating the organization’s rich legacy and enduring values, which Benedick described as "standing on the shoulders of those who came before us."

Benedick highlighted that St. Coletta’s mission — to respect the dignity of each individual — has not wavered over the decades. She shared stories from the early days, quoting a founding sister’s diary entries about the Sisters' dedication to keeping St. Coletta's running, even when faced with challenges like leaking roofs and broken boilers. “They relied on prayers and the generosity of donors, much like we do today,” she said.

This mission is perhaps best reflected in the words of President John F. Kennedy, which were once inscribed on the back of a commemorative Caritas plate: “Although children may be the victims of fate, they will not be the victims of our neglect.” Benedick emphasized that these words remain as relevant today as ever, inspiring the work St. Coletta's does to uplift those who face significant challenges.

Benedick also shared a recent heartfelt example of St. Coletta's mission in action: the admission of two students with complex medical needs who rely on St. Coletta’s support. "For these children, we may be their last and best hope," Benedick said, noting the critical need for specialized wheelchairs and other equipment. "On behalf of these children, I say thank you."

Funds raised at the Caritas Benefit will go directly toward vital services and resources, enabling St. Coletta's to continue being a lifeline for families in need. With this support, St. Coletta's renews its promise to provide compassionate care, guided by its founding values, and to ensure that no child is ever a “victim of neglect.”
