Taser Deployed During 2 Joliet Downtown Arrests: Cops

JOLIET, IL — A 40-year-old Joliet man is now at the Will County Jail after Joliet police say officers used a taser to subdue Derek Webb after he struggled with the officers and tried to get away during a traffic stop over the weekend in downtown Joliet.

Webb is now being lodged at the Will County Jail where he's charged with armed habitual criminal, unlawful possession of a weapon by felon, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, aggravated battery to a peace officer and resisting a peace officer.

Webb's friend, 27-year-old Kameron Tucker of Lockport was also brought to the Will County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the following events took place around 2:40 a.m. during the early morning hours of Sunday:

  • Officers made a traffic stop near North Chicago Street and East Van Buren Street for an equipment violation and failure to use a turn signal. Christopher Bailey, 35, of Joliet, was the driver and Webb was the front seat passenger and Tucker was sitting in the rear passenger seat.
  • While an officer was speaking to Bailey, Tucker suddenly opened the rear passenger door. Tucker was ordered out of the vehicle and detained without incident.
  • Webb was ordered out of the vehicle at which time he began to struggle with the officers, striking an officer in the face with a cell phone. Webb tried to run from the officers and continued to pull away.
  • Officers deployed a taser and Webb was placed into custody following this struggle.
  • Officers recovered a loaded handgun from a cross body bag that Webb was wearing. Officers recovered an additional loaded handgun under the seat where Tucker had been seated. Webb was transported to Silver Cross Hospital by the Joliet Fire Department for injuries sustained during the struggle with officers. He was later transferred by ambulance to Loyola Medical Center in Maywood for treatment. Webb was released from the hospital during the early evening hours of Sunday. He was transferred to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

As for the driver, Bailey was cited and released at the scene for improper signal when turning, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and driving without a registration light.
