Thomas Jefferson Elementary School was the site of the City of Joliet’s annual Arbor Day event. Kindergarten students began the celebration reciting a poem celebrating trees. Next, students including helped Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, City Councilwoman Jan Quillman, City Arborist Jim Teiber, Joliet District 86 Superintendent Dr. Theresa Rouse, and Jefferson principal Consuelo Ramirez plant a new elm tree at the school. Jefferson Assistant Principal Ben Meinert also participated in the ceremony dressed up as a tree!

In addition, five Jefferson students were named winners of the City of Joliet Arbor Day Poster Contest. Winners included Joseph Arteaga, Sindy Godinez, Kelly Mangabhai, Roberto Meza, and Sophielynn Miranda. Seedling trees were also distributed to students to take home to plant. The National Arbor Day Foundation recently recognized the City of Joliet for achieving the designation of Tree City USA for 31 consecutive years.
