Tom Charley, Longtime Owner Of O'Charley's Irish Pub, Dies

JOLIET, IL — Tom Charley, the longtime owner of Joliet’s former O’Charley’s Irish Pub, has died, according to his sister.

Charley “perfected his final Irish goodbye” on Tuesday morning, Kathy Charley wrote in a Facebook post.

“Tom passed away peacefully, and finally for the first time in a long time, he is no longer in pain. He fought this battle to the very end,” she wrote.

“Tom loved owning O'Charley's Irish Pub for almost 40 years. He carried the warmth, wit, and generous spirit so often found in his Irish heart. He was a man who treasured family, friendship, and laughter. His stories, kind smile, and unwavering loyalty brought comfort and joy to all who knew him.”

O’Charley’s closed its doors at North Center and Oneida streets in 2021 after years as one of Joliet’s favorite stops for St. Patrick’s Day.

Tom Charley is survived by four brothers as well as his sister, plus many nieces and nephews, and a cousin, according to Kathy Charley. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

“Tom always loved a good party, especially if it was for him … so that’s what we will do one final time, with a celebration of life,” Kathy Charley wrote.

The celebration will take place 3-7 p.m. Aug. 15 at Joliet Moose Lodge No. 300, 25 Springfield Ave.

Attendees are invited to wear O’Charley’s, Notre Dame or Irish attire, “and bring your best stories,” Kathy Charley wrote.
