Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team Wins Regional

JOLIET, IL - The Troy Middle School Scholastic Bowl Team recently won the 2017/2018 Region 7 Class AA Regional Scholastic Bowl Competition, which was held this year at Troy Middle School. “We ended our season with a winning record, a well-trained and energetic JV team ready for battle next year and an incredible experience in winning the first Scholastic Bowl Regional in 11 years,” team sponsor and TMS Science Capstone Exploratory teacher Dr. Barbara Will-Henn said.

The teams competing in this year’s regional competition were Troy Middle School in Plainfield; Richland Elementary School in Crest Hill; and Hufford Junior High School, Gompers Junior High School, Washington Junior High School and Dirksen Junior High School in Joliet.

TMS 8th grader Daniel Schalk was the overall individual toss-up high scorer. In the final match between Troy and Hufford, Troy was down by 20, but came back and was able to pull ahead. Hufford then came back, and the two were tied at the end of the regular match, which threw the match into a sudden death tie breaker.

The first team to correctly answer 2 toss-ups would be declared the winner. Troy jumped to a fast 1-0 lead with the first question. The next two had Hufford buzz in with incorrect answers that Troy was not able to answer, either. Will-Henn said the crowd was on the edge of their seats.

The fourth question had Hufford buzz in, but answer incorrectly. Amy Gusewelle was unsuccessfully hitting her buzzer and finally announced, “Buzz-Buzz, Buzz-Buzz,” and was acknowledged by the moderator and responded with the correct answer.

The winning answer was, Illinois-born journalist Megyn Kelly, to the question of the political commentator who interviewed Russia's Vladimir Putin for her Sunday night show.
