The William B. Orenic Intermediate School Young Achievers Service Club is asking the public to help them with their goal of raising $4,500 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society through a coin drive.
“Pennies for Patients” is an annual fundraiser the club hosts at the Troy Community School District 30-C school, where students, staff and others donate loose change throughout January that the club then donates to cancer research.
Last year, the club raised $3,756.28 for the cause. This year, according to sponsors Chelsea Stoltz and Alison Radek, the students set their goal higher.

“We do this fundraiser because blood cancer is something that affects way too many people,” Stoltz said. “The LLS is a wonderful organization that helps fund research and provide patient resources for those battling these diseases and is one of the reasons that survival rates have risen.”
Stoltz said W.B.O. students also benefit by learning about community service and selflessness. Through the campaign, students also build skills of leadership, cooperation, planning and organization.
