Violet I. DeGroate
Formerly of Joliet, Illinois, peacefully passed away at her residence in Surprise, Arizona, surrounded by her loving family on September 22, 2023. She was 87 years old.
Violet is survived by her three devoted children, Sheila (Scott) Kovac, Cheryl (Kevin) Whelchel and Scott (Janet) DeGroate. Her legacy continues through her eight cherished grandchildren: Jason (Lori) Kovac, Maegan (Michael) Fantozzi, Matt Whelchel, Christopher (AJ) Whelchel, Phillip Whelchel, Nita (George) Ragsdale, Brittany (Michael) Thiem and Ashley DeGroate. She also leaves behind twenty great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews. Her love for them all was endless.
Violet was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, John DeGroate, with whom she shared a lifelong partnership since their union in marriage on August 18, 1955. She was also preceded by her parents William and Mary Ellen Baker, and her three siblings, Fred Baker, Geraldine Fisher, and Lucille Dale.

Violet was born and educated in Dongola, Illinois, and her journey in life was marked by her dedication and commitment to family and community. Together with her husband, she was the proud owner and operator of DeGroate Petroleum Services, Inc. in New Lenox, Illinois until their retirement in 2013. Her love for travel allowed her and John to explore the United States creating countless cherished memories.
Violet's faith was central to her life, she was an active member of Our Savior Lutheran Church since 1965. Her devotion to her family knew no limits, and her role as a mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother brought immense joy to her heart. She was a talented homemaker and a gifted cook, known for her delicious meals that brought family and friends together.

Violet's engaging personality, quick wit, and love of card games made her a delight to be around. She formed deep friendships that transcended mere acquaintances, turning friends into family.
A Celebration of Life will be held in her honor at Our Savior Lutheran Church, located at 1910 Black Rd. Joliet, Illinois 60435, on Saturday, November 4th at 11:00 A.M. and live on Our Savior Lutheran Church Facebook page. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests memorial donations be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, Agave Hospice, 3240 E. Union Hills Dr., Suite 145, Phoenix, AZ 85058, or to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Visitation will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church on Saturday, November 4th from 10:00 A.M. until the time of the service.
