Death Of Correctional Officer Kevin Brewer Needs Further Study: Coroner

Kevin Brewer died while on duty Saturday night at the Will County jail in downtown Joliet. He was 37 years old.

JOLIET, IL - An autopsy has been performed in connection with this past weekend's unexpected death of Will County Deputy Correctional Officer Kevin Brewer. On Monday evening, Will County Chief Deputy Coroner Kevin Stevenson said that the preliminary cause and manner related to Brewer's death is still pending further studies. It may take several more weeks for toxicology lab results as well as the completion of any police investigation surrounding Brewer's death.

On Monday, the Will County Sheriff's Department issued a statement expressing "great grief and sadness" over this weekend's unexpected death of Brewer. The 37-year-old law enforcement official was on duty Saturday night at the downtown jail facility when he was rushed by ambulance to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he died. Brewer had worked for Will County since 2007.

"Administrators, supervisors and coworkers describe Kevin as being 'truly a great guy and wonderful family man,'" a statement from the Will County Sheriff's Department read. "The news of his sudden death has shocked the entire Will County Sheriff's Office. We will keep Kevin in our hearts forever."

Kevin Brewer was married to Brooke Hernandez Brewer, who was appointed last year to fill a vacancy on the Joliet City Council following the resignation of Jim McFarland. "We extend our deepest condolences to Kevin's wife, three daughters and to his family and friends," the Will County Sheriff's Department announced.
