Wilmington Man Steals Car In Crest Hill, Arrest Made In Joliet: PD

Joliet police pulled over the Kia Sorento near Cass and Collins Streets after learning the car was stolen earlier on Monday.

JOLIET, IL — A 30-year-old Wilmington man who has been booked into the Will County Jail four times so far in 2023 was arrested and released on a Notice to Appear following Monday night's stolen car arrest on Joliet's east side.

Joliet police say David Smalley was arrested and released on charges of Possession of a Stolen Motor Vehicle, Obstructing a Peace Officer and Driving While License Suspended.

Joliet police spokesman Dwayne English said the following events on Monday night led to Smalley's capture by the Joliet police officers patrolling the northeast side of the city.

According to English:

  • At 9:20 p.m., officers stopped the Kia Sorento near East Cass Street and Collins Street after learning the car was reported stolen from Crest Hill earlier on Monday.
  • Smalley ran from the car, but then quickly stopped and followed commands from the officers.
  • Officers learned that Smalley’s Illinois driver’s license is currently suspended. Officers with the Crest Hill Police Department arrived and took possession of the stolen vehicle.

Smalley comes from the 100 block of North Kankakee Street in Wilmington.
