Woman, 19, Shot Near Louis Joliet Mall: Police

JOLIET, IL — The Joliet Police Department announced that a 19-year-old woman was shot on Saturday afternoon prior to crashing her sport utility vehicle near the Louis Joliet Mall.

The woman's injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Joliet Police spokesman Dwayne English notified Patch. The shooting happened at 3:22 p.m.

Joliet police said that someone inside a sedan fired a gun at a sport utility vehicle, striking the 19-year-old woman as she was driving.

The shooting victim then lost control of her sport utility vehicle and collided with another person's vehicle, English stated.

This collision then caused the uninvolved vehicle to strike an additional vehicle unrelated to the incident, Joliet police said.

The shooting victim was taken to the AMITA St. Joseph Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, English noted.

Joliet police stressed that "this is an active investigation in its early stages as Joliet Police Detectives work to identify a suspect or suspects. Joliet's Bob Hernandez was the first person on the scene to report on Saturday afternoon's shooting, with one of his Facebook Live videos.

Hernandez talked to one witness who told him she heard one of the gunshots, and saw the victim, who was shot in the face, run into one of the nearby businesses seeking help.
