3 New Course Offerings at Lyons Township

Self-Defense For Girls will teach students about societal gender roles and how to reduce assault probability, course guide says.

LA GRANGE, IL — As students decide on their classes for next year, Lyons Township High School is making them aware of a few new course offerings. One of the classes will be Advanced Placement Computer Science Principles, which will be offered at the South Campus for the first time.

Another class is called Basic Self-Defense for Girls, which is a new semester-long physical education class offered at the junior and senior levels. Instructors will teach students how to avoid and escape physical assault, according to the Academic Program Guide. "Additional topics covered include gender roles in society, healthy relationships, positive coping mechanisms and how to recognize risk and reduce assault probability," the guide says.

The third new class is American Sign Language, with third- and fourth-year options now available.
