Alumna describes life as a pilot to LT aviation students

1975 LT graduate Karen Koeing spent the day speaking to various aviation classes and with any student interested in flying and/or aviation

Lyons Township High School 1975 graduate Karen Koeing is an International Captain for UPS. She flies a Boeing 757/767 jet all over the world. She started her flying career in Aviation class at LT her senior year then continued her flight training at the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana. On Tuesday, November 14, Koeing spent the day at LT, speaking to various aviation classes and with any student interested in flying and/or aviation.

With more than 20,000 hours of flight time, she described her climb up the ladder to the captain’s chair, what a typical day looks like, the aviation job market and imparted advice to budding pilots.

Koeing’s visit is part of LT’s Career Exploration Series, a program started several years ago by Emma Sorrentino ’17 to bring career speakers to South Campus. Before she graduated, she mentored Evie Anagnos ’20 to take over. Evie has since been joined by freshman Justin Backus ‘21 to form the team organizing this year’s guest speaker series.
