Art abounds at and after LTHS

Fashion public relations, fabric design, interior design, art education and scientific illustration were just a few of the careers and pathways discussed at a recent Art Panel orchestrated by Lyons Township High School art teacher Patrick Page.

More than one dozen former graduates returned to their alma mater to discuss their college experiences, careers and make suggestions about pursuing art after high school. They recapped their art education, answered questions and shared their work with current students. The art panel is a great opportunity for current students to network and learn from graduates.

Page wants students to know that there are so many careers related to art and that art spans many paths. Kaylee Miller (Class of 2017) is studying Industrial Design at the University of Illinois, Chicago. She noted that there is art in nearly every product, even in the nitty gritty details of a water bottle. Similarly, 2017 classmate Grace Reilly at Lewis and Clark College is studying Environmental Studies with a minor in Art. Last spring, she completed an independent study drawing scientific illustrations at the National History Library to help accurately convey species.

Many of the panelists encouraged students to take advantage of LT resources and materials and to know that LT is preparing them better and in more ways than they expect. Olivia Minshall (Class of 2012) urged students to try as many mediums as they can. “I began as a journalism major, switched to graphic design and am now in a post-baccalaureate program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in painting. Don’t be afraid to try things and do what you love.”

Art teacher Patrick Page says, “LT is very unique compared to other art programs at other high schools. LT graduates a large number of students who go on to study art and eventually land jobs in the field.”
