Field Museum Hosts Traditional Māori Powhiri Welcoming New Zealand Rugby Team to Chicago
The Field Museum will host a traditional powhiri on November 3 at 8:00 a.m. to welcome the Māori All Blacks rugby team to Chicago. The powhiri is a Māori welcoming that involves speeches, dancing, and singing. This powhiri will be held at the Māori Meeting House, Ruatepupuke II, located in the Field Museum.
The Ruatepupuke II is one of only three such buildings outside New Zealand. It serves as a spiritual outpost for sharing the ancient Māori culture and history. The building and surrounding area are governed by Māori customs.
The Māori All Blacks is a historic rugby team that represents the proud Māori culture of New Zealand. Each player's heritage and eligibility are confirmed through genealogy before he can represent the Māori people. The Māori All Blacks will be playing against the USA Eagles on November 4 at Toyota Park. Photo opportunities will be available throughout the powhiri.
