La Grange Theatre Meets Ticket Goal

The operator reveals the big draws over the last year. The village may soon see legions of Swifties.

LA GRANGE, IL – The operator of the La Grange Theatre said Monday that his goal was to sell 180,000 movie tickets in a year. The mark was met.

At a La Grange Village Board meeting, Chris Johnson, CEO of the Downers Grove-based Classic Cinemas chain, said the local theater sold 180,800 tickets in the last year.

The newly renovated theater reopened in May 2022 with "Top Gun: Maverick."

Since last September, Johnson said, the biggest movies at the theater have been "Despicable Me" and "Barbie." Referring to "Barbie," he said La Grange saw a "sea of pink."

The movie, "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which opens Oct. 13, is also expected to do well.

"Your town is a big Taylor Swift town," Johnson told the Village Board. "You're No. 2 in ticket sales of our 16 locations. I guess it's a female-empowered town – Barbie and Taylor Swift."

The chain's locations are mainly in the Chicago suburbs.
