La Grange's Rate Of Increase In Virus Cases Falls

LA GRANGE, IL — La Grange's rate of increase in coronavirus cases has fallen over the last several weeks. But even reporting on the numbers themselves can draw readers' criticism.
On Sunday, La Grange's number of coronavirus cases was 161, up from 145 a week earlier. That amounts to a 10 percent increase, less than the previous week's 19 percent.

One reader objected to La Grange Patch's headline for last week's coronavirus update story. The comment was part of a growing chorus of criticism from readers that the coronavirus pandemic is being overblown.

Over the last week, suburban Cook County's case number jumped to 27,573, an 16 percent increase from the previous week's 23,839. The county's deaths increased by 16 percent to 1,181, up from 1,019 a week earlier.
As of Sunday, La Grange's number of cases worked out to 10.5 cases per thousand, which is higher than nearby towns. — 2.9 in Western Springs, 4.5 in Clarendon Hills, 4.6 in Elmhurst, 5.3 in La Grange Park, 6.5 in Burr Ridge, 7.7 in DuPage County, 10 in Hinsdale and 11.3 in suburban Cook County.
As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 110,304, up 17 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 4,856 state residents.
Nationally, 1.7 million people have caught the virus, and 98,035 have died from it.
