Lyons Township High School junior David Kopp, of LaGrange Park, was recently named the Chicago Blackhawks Youth Player of the Month. He was honored on the ice February 22 before the game against the Colorado Avalanche.

Kopp plays defense on the Blackhawks Blind Hockey Team. The team was founded in 2015 and is comprised of players who are either blind or visually impaired. The team uses an oversized puck that contains something akin to ball bearings, so that when the puck is struck and glides across the ice, it makes noise, which allows players to locate the puck.

The teams practice once a week and participates in two tournaments a year, as well as several scrimmages. Teams are divided based on vision level and skill set. Nearly all of the same rules apply.

In addition to the plaque he received, he will return in April for a morning skate and an opportunity to meet a few players.

LT Paraprofessional Meg Keeve nominated Kopp thinking he would be an ideal candidate. She said, “I had the opportunity to watch David play and was aware of his other interests, including cross country, track, and Business Club just to name a few.” “When we found out David was selected, students, past and present teachers, club sponsors and coaches were beyond thrilled,” she added.
