LTHS artists win lion's share of awards

A total of 70 pieces of artwork created by 35 Lyons Township High School artists were recognized in this year’s Regional Scholastic Art Awards. Eighteen pieces will advance to national competition in New York, where they will join selections from across the country. Judges will critique and narrow the field again, choosing winning pieces based on thought, technique, execution and overall impact. LT's winning contingent includes two Gold Key portfolios and 14 Gold Key pieces.

Thirteen students will advance to national competition, three of them with multiple pieces of art. Among those competing at nationals with multiple entries are seniors Zoey Knipstein, of LaGrange Park, with two photographs, Aimee Rounds, of Western Springs, with a portfolio and painting and Delaney Sullivan, of Western Springs, with a painting and a print.

In addition to the pieces that will advance to national competition, Lion artists received one Silver Key Art Portfolio and one Honorable Mention Art Portfolios in which the student exhibits a thematic group of eight works, something that takes months to develop. Students also earned 21 Silver Key awards, pieces that represent the second highest level of achievement, and 31 Honorable Mention awards, works judged worthy of recognition.

This year at the regional level, more than 1,200 students from 40 schools participated, with more than 2,200 individual works and 79 portfolios submitted. Winning pieces can be seen at the regional Scholastics Art show at Downers North High School through February 4. The opening will be Sunday, January 3, 1 - 4pm. Masks will be worn. No refreshments will be served. The show will remain open for viewing during building hours (6:30am - 8pm) through Friday, February 4, 2022.

The Scholastic Art Competition continues to be the longest-running, most prestigious recognition program for creative teens in the U.S., and the largest source of scholarships for young artists and writers.
