LTHS Board May Warn Longtime Teacher
Board members are set to vote on a "notice of remedy" at their meeting.

LA GRANGE, IL – The Lyons Township High School board may give a warning to one of its teachers.
On Monday night, the board plans to vote on a "notice of remedy" for Katherine Karubas, an English teacher.
The board's agenda does not indicate what the notice is for. But members are set to hold a closed meeting on personnel matters before their open session.

Typically, a notice warns that if a teacher repeats what the board sees as misconduct, the school will take further action. That includes a suspension without pay or firing as a tenured teacher.
Karubas, whose salary is $141,000, teaches English IV World Perspectives and has been a gymnastics coach, according to the school's website. Her LinkedIn page says she has worked for the school for 18 years.

The school has about 250 teachers. One of the last teachers to get a notice of remedy was Tom Stukel, a critic of the school's controversial grading policies. In 2022, he resigned and moved to Florida.
Also at Monday's meeting, the board plans to vote on a five-year contract with the local teachers union, the Lyons Township High School Education Association.
But the board is apparently keeping the document under wraps from the public until after its vote. The contract involves a big part of the school's budget.
In Illinois, most school boards decide to keep union agreements secret before their votes. In the election earlier this month, the union endorsed and sent mailers for school board President Kari Dillon, member Jill Beda Daniels and candidate Tim Albores, all of whom prevailed.
