North Riverside Mall Murder: Chicago Man Charged

A Chicago man has been charged with first degree murder after gunning down 42-year-old Maria Ruiz.

NORTH RIVERSIDE, IL — A Chicago man has been charged with first-degree murder after gunning down 42-year-old Maria Ruiz in the parking lot of North Riverside Park Mall. Honorio Perez, 49, of Chicago, was charged with one felony count of first-degree murder and one felony count of aggravated battery with a firearm.

Police said Ruiz was found inside her vehicle at the mall with gunshot wounds to her body and was taken to Loyola Hospital, where she passed away from her injuries.

Perez was taken into custody without incident Jan. 15, according to police.

Ruiz's 19-year-old son, Jose, set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for funeral and memorial expenses. According to the GoFundMe, Jose's sister was shot and has a wounded arm. Maria was shot in the head and killed. Besides his sister, Jose also has a nine-year-old brother.
