Elevate Your Heart Rate and Improve Strength and Flexibility At Home

By Jacquie Fowler, Owner of Orangetheory Fitness LaGrange and Willowbrook-Hinsdale

At a time when fitness facilities are closed and space at home is often limited, it is even more important to stay active and stay focused on meeting your health and wellness goals. Plus, activity increases energy and decreases stress, something that we all need right now.

Contrary to what many may think, there are several things you can do to elevate your heart rate and improve your strength and flexibility at home. Below are a few tips!

  • No weights? No problem! You can use water jugs, heavier canned goods, or anything you have around your home.
  • A great cardio blaster is Tabata training. A sample workout might include:
    • Run up your stairs and walk down. Do this exercise for 20 seconds and then rest for 10 seconds. Do 20 seconds on/10 seconds off for five minutes.
    • Then work on a few bodyweight exercises for 6-8 minutes focusing on keeping everything slow and controlled. Try push-ups, squats, lunges, sit-ups, leg lifts, bridges, double crunches or single leg deadlifts. Think about five seconds for every repetition- slowly lower for three counts, pause for one count, and up again for one count.
    • Go back and repeat the tabata cardio portion and again the strength training portion. Do ALL of this 3-4 times through.
  • Since the weather is getting nicer, take your workout outside. Walk, run, jog or bike. The fresh air and sunshine can also really increase your mood and energy. You can do walking lunges up and down the sidewalk, shuffle sideways down the block, find a hill and run up and walk down or jump rope in your driveway.
  • Now is also a good time to work on your flexibility, an often overlooked part in many fitness routines. Always hold a stretch for at least 20 seconds. A good rule of thumb is to shoot for 20 minutes of stretching each day. Work on your hamstrings, back, glutes, shoulders, chest, forearms and biceps. This will enhance any fitness routine you have and help avoid injury.
