Outdoor piano returns to La Grange in August

All ages, abilities and types of music welcomed for play.

A colorful upright piano that has been turned into a work of art returns to La Grange next week when it is installed near the outdoor fountain by Village Hall for impromptu summer concerts, according to the La Grange Business Association.

Launching August 1, the painted piano will be placed there through August 31 for performances by area musicians and music lovers. It is available for all ages, abilities and types of music. Visiting is free and everyone is encouraged to play.

In September, the piano will be moved outside of the Stone Avenue METRA Station where it will stay through the West End Arts Festival, held near there September 8-9.

Scheduled piano performances will be held at 7PM on Thursdays including:
August 2: Brian Blankenship of Tank and the Beez
August 9: Students from the American Music Institute
August 16: Students from Sato Music Studios
August 23: Students from the American Music Institute

The piano calls attention to the vibrant arts scene in La Grange and complements the annual summer art exhibit organized by the La Grange Business Association, this year called "Live Love La Grange." The exhibit features 30 whimsically-designed love seats displayed in front of local businesses. The art project is sponsored by Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and the Village of La Grange.

The piano was designed and painted by local artist Larry Law. Called "Jazz in the Sunset," it's reminiscent of a group of jazz musicians playing around Jackson Square in New Orleans while appreciating a beautiful sunset. A tarp will cover the piano during inclement weather and allow it to remain outdoors.

"This community piano joins the mix of attractions that make La Grange the perfect spot to visit this summer," said Kathy Dierkes, the president of the La Grange Business Association. "There's always something special happening in our restaurants, retailers and lively arts scene," she said.
