LA GRANGE, IL – Student involvement in Lyons Township High School's activities and athletics is high compared to other schools, officials said last week.

At a school board meeting, Principal Jennifer Tyrrell reported that 80 percent of students participated in at least one activity or sport last year. And 60 percent took part in at least two, she said.

Tyrrell said school officials haven't heard of another high school that has hit 80 percent.

"Our students time and time again say their participation in co-curricular activities and athletics is a highlight for them," she said. "If we don't have something for students, there's a process that students can propose a club. And our students say there's something for everyone."

She said the high numbers represented "something greater with respect to connectedness at LT."

Board member Tim Albores, who is also director of student services at Plainfield School District 202, said student participation in activities and sports was impressive.

"That 80 percent number is outstanding, and I think we need to continue to try to capture that 20 percent," he said.
