Read Across America Day Celebrated at District 102
Dr. Seuss and Diversity Honored During 21st Annual Celebration
Read Across America Day, an annual reading motivation founded by the National Education Association (NEA), calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2. Launched twenty one years ago as a way to get kids excited about reading, NEA's Read Across America has grown into a year-long program that culminates every year on March 2, the birthday of Theodor Seuss Geisel, more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. In addition to celebrating the good doctor’s 114th birthday, the theme of “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers” was also honored on this special day.
Elementary schools in La Grange School District 102 celebrated reading and literacy by taking part in a variety of Seuss-centered activities and challenges and by reading some of the doctor’s classic works, as well as a number of diverse books. The Education Association also donated $125 to each library to celebrate this reading initiative.
The NEA Read Across America is a literacy project that encourages readers, both young and old, to discover the joys of reading and cultivate good reading habits. As the nation’s largest reading celebration, more than 45 million students, parents, educators and others participate every year.
