Riverside Police Chief Asks Rauner to Veto Marijuana Bill

House Bill 218 proposes less severe legal consequences for cannabis possession.

Submitted by the Riverside Police Department.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel wrote a letter June 30 to Gov. Bruce Rauner requesting that he veto House Bill 218.

According to the Illinois General Assembly, the bill would change the Cannabis Control Act so the possession of 30 grams of cannabis or less would be a “petty offense charged by a Uniform Cannabis Ticket with a fine of $100” rather than a misdemeanor crime.

The bill would also make possession of between 30 and 500 of cannabis a misdemeanor for a first offense rather than a felony.
