St. Cletus Students Inspired by Catholic Relief Services Speaker
St. Cletus School Instills Faith and Service in its Students

“I may be from 10,000 miles away . . . I may speak or sound a little differently from you . . . but I am your neighbor.” On March 2, Thomas Awiapo from Catholic Relief Services shared his truly inspiring story of survival and success with the students of St. Cletus School.
Mr. Awiapo’s talk complimented St. Cletus School’s mission of instilling in students an awareness of the needs of others and a readiness to serve others. St. Cletus students also have been saving their own money to donate to Catholic Relief Services during Lent. Mr. Awiapo’s talk compelled students to continue those efforts.
Mr. Awiapo grew up in a small African village in Ghana, was orphaned before the age of ten, and was left to struggle on his own for survival. He was the second of four brothers; his youngest two brothers died of malnutrition and lack of care.

His search for food led him to an elementary school, where he was fed a small meal every day. He survived, studied, and eventually won scholarships to attend college. He later earned a master’s degree from California State University.
Today, Mr. Awiapo works with Catholic Relief Services as a consultant and integral part in bringing global solidarity. He lives in Ghana with his wife and four children. His story of initiative and his joyful presence has brought inspiration to thousands of people in the U.S.
