8-Foot-Tall Waves And Deadly Currents Threaten Lake Forest Beaches

LAKE FOREST, IL — The National Weather Service issued a beach hazards statement for Lake Forest on Monday due to deadly rip currents and waves up to 8 feet tall in Lake Michigan.

The warning is in effect through Wednesday evening.

"Swimming conditions will be life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers," forecasters said.

To date, there have been 41 drownings in Lake Michigan this year, according to the Great Lakes Surf Rescue Project. Last month, an Evanston Parks and Recreation employee found a man unresponsive in the water near Lee Street Beach.

The National Weather Service forecasted more rain through Tuesday after a weekend of heavy rain throughout the Chicagoland. Temperatures are also expected to cool in the coming days, forecasters said.
