Arrest In Chainsaw Attack After Burglar Caught In Act: Blotter

Detectives track drug-dealing teen; damaged car's driver had twice legal limit for drunkenness: Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Police Blotters

LAKE FOREST, IL — The following information comes from Lake Forest and Lake Bluff police and Lake County court records as a record of those arrested by police. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt, and criminal charges, which represent merely accusations by the state, are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Circuit Clerk of Courts. All persons named are innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

INCIDENTS

Between midnight and 7 a.m. on June 24, numerous cars were burglarized and one was stolen from the 200 block of Western Avenue, the 1400 block of Kathryn Lane, the 100 block of Wildwood Road and the 500 block of Ryan Place.

Images from an outdoor security camera showed someone rummaging through an unlocked car shortly after 3:30 a.m. All the cars had been left unlocked. Wallets, garage door openers, credit cards and other items were reported stolen.

Deerfield police later found the car abandoned and ransacked, police reported.

ARRESTS

James Hulseman, 65, of the 180 block of Winthrop Lane, Lake Forest, was arrested around 11:45 p.m. on June 17 in the 300 block of Rockland Road and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving under the influence of alcohol with a breath alcohol concentration of 0.08 or greater and driving without a valid license. He was also cited with no valid registration and operating uninsured motor vehicle. Police reported Hulseman admitted getting into a crash in a gas station parking lot after drinking an unknown amount of vodka. Officers said he provided a breath sample indicating his BAC was 0.2 — more than twice the legal limit.

Bryan A. Wagner, 53, of the 600 block of S. Rockefeller Road, Lake Forest, was arrested around 10 p.m. on June 22 after police got a call a battery had just taken place at his house. Officers reported Wagner appeared heavily intoxicated and disorderly, and a person told police he pushed them to the ground twice after they attempted to leave the home. Prosecutors approved a single misdemeanor count of domestic battery.

Two 17-year-old Lake Forest boys, a 16-year-old Lake Forest boy, a 14-year-old Lake Forest boy and a 14-year-old Evanston girl were taken into custody in a parking lot on Western Avenue on the afternoon of June 25 as Lake Forest detectives investigated a "known juvenile drug dealer." Detectives reported they found narcotics, cannabis and various forms of drug paraphernalia in his possession, as well as more than $1,000 in cash. The teen targeted by investigators was referred to juvenile court, while the rest were cited with local cannabis and paraphernalia offenses and released to their parents. The girl, who had been reported missing by her parents, was returned to them by an Evanston police detective.

Matthew Miller, 44, of the 1700 block of Devonshire Lane, Lake Forest, was arrested shortly before 10 a.m. on June 28 in the 1300 block of Western Avenue after police got a call that someone with a knife had been battered and Miller was leaving the scene. Officers detained him in a rear parking lot, and after speaking with others involved in the incident, determined Miller had struck a juvenile. He was charged with two count of domestic battery and one count of assault.

Marek Josko, 67, of Przemysl, Poland, was extradited from Poland to Waukegan to face a charge of reckless homicide in connection with a multi-car crash in 1995 that left 26-year-old Dennis Bourassa dead. Authorities say Josko was driving on the wrong side of Route 41 in Lake Forest when he triggered the crash. He later provided a sample that indicated his blood alcohol concentration after the crash was 0.19 — about twice the legal limit. Once released on bond, he fled to Poland, where he was finally arrested in February. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed his extradition until June 25. Read more...

Carl Young, 28, of the 6500 block of South Loomis Boulevard, was arrested on July 1 in Franklin Park and charged with burglary and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in connection with a June 18 incident in the 1100 block of Highland Avenue in Lake Forest. That day, officers got a report that a man in a black Mazda sedan stopped and went into an open landscape trailer in an attempt to steal a chainsaw from inside. When someone tried to stop him, the burglar struck him with the chainsaw, injuring him. After Lake Forest detectives identified Young as a possible suspect, the person who he struck was able to identify him in a line-up. Investigators were also able to identify the black Mazda and some of Young's associated with the help of the Chicago Theft Task Force. On July 1, investigators from multiple agencies conducting surveillance on Young and two accomplices witnessed them carrying out a similar type of theft in Franklin Park while driving the same black Mazda. A judge later approved an arrest warrant for the Lake Forest charge and Young is due in Lake County court next month.
