Cops Smell Weed, Find Cocaine After Driver Asks For Directions: Lake Forest Crime Reports

LAKE FOREST, IL — The following information comes from the Lake Forest Police Department as a record of those arrested by police. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt and criminal charges, which represent merely accusations by the state, are often dropped or reduced. All persons named are innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
SUSPENDED LICENSE
A 28-year-old North Chicago woman was arrested Sept. 11 at 6:40 p.m. near the intersection of Deerpath and Clover and charged with driving with a suspended license. Police said they discovered her behind the wheel of a vehicle disabled in traffic. Officers determined she did not have a valid license or current insurance and the vehicle's registration had been suspended.

SOLICITATION (WITH NO PERMIT)
A 24-year-old Waukegan man was arrested Sept. 14 at 4:16 p.m. in the 500 block of Green Bay Road after police were called to the area of Illinois and Vine for a report that solicitors were going door-to-door attempting to sell items with no permit. Police were told they were last seen driving a silver Mercury Sable station wagon, which police found and pulled over. The driver was interviewed and arrested. He was charged with having no valid driver's license and issued citations for solicitation without a permit, no valid insurance and no valid registration.

CANNABIS PIPE
A 21-year-old Gurnee woman driving a red Kia was pulled over on Sept. 14 at 11:56 p.m. in the area of Sheridan and Deerpath roads for an equipment violation. When police approached the driver, they said they smelled marijuana. Police then found a glass pipe in the driver's possession and wrote her a ticket for possession of drug paraphernalia.
ATTEMPTED POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE
A 29-year-old Algonquin man and a 51-year-old Elgin man (who share the same last name) were arrested on Sept. 15 at 10:01 a.m. at Conway Farms and Old Bridge and charged with drug offenses.
Police said they were working a traffic checkpoint during the BMW Championship when the driver of a blue Mitsubishi stopped to ask directions.
Officers smelled marijuana coming from inside the car and asked the driver about it. He told them he had some cannabis and a pipe in the vehicle, which officers found.
While interviewing the Elgin man, police said they located a "small amount of cocaine in his possession."
The Algonquin man was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia.
Lake Forest police said the Elgin man was charged with felony unlawful possession of a controlled substance, but information about his charges was not available from the Lake County Clerk of the Circuit Court as of Sept. 21.
