Cops Witness Drunk Woman Drive Into Wires, Onto Sidewalk: Blotter

LAKE FOREST-LAKE BLUFF, IL — The following information comes from the Lake Forest and Lake Bluff police departments and court records as a record of those arrested by police. Readers are reminded that an arrest is not an indication of guilt and criminal charges, which represent merely accusations by the state, are often dropped or reduced. Updated information may be available from the Lake County Circuit Clerk of Courts. All persons named are innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

ARRESTS

A 32-year-old Waukegan man was arrested around 1:30 a.m. on March 17 and charged with driving with a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia following an investigation into a two-car crash in the area of Route 41 and Route 60. Officers learned the man had never been issued a driver's license and had a glass pipe used for smoking cannabis in his possession

Reginald Tate, 34, of the 7600 block of South Philips Avenue, Chicago, was arrested at 6 a.m. on March 19 and charged with armed habitual criminal, armed violence, manufacture of counterfeit items, forgery, continuing financial criminal enterprise and possession of cannabis after Lake Forest and Chicago police, along with federal agents from the FBI and the U.S. Secret Service, executed a search warrant at his home. Shawheen Sariri, 23, of the 200 block of Cedar Avenue, Lake Villa, was arrested on March 20 and charged with predatory criminal sexual assault, aggravated criminal sexual abuse and criminal sexual assault following an investigation into a report of a sexual assault involving a girl under the age of 14. A 19-year-old Zion man was arrested around 9 p.m. on March 23 in the area of Sheridan Road and Spruce Avenue and charged with possession of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia after a traffic stop. Officers smelled marijuana and the driver handed over a bag of it. Police also found a grinder and a digital scale and issued the driver a citation for an unspecified moving violation.

A 32-year-old Chicago woman and a 29-year-old Chicago man were arrested around 2 a.m. on March 27 in the area of Route 41 and Deerpath Road after officers reported a car going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone. The driver was charged with driving with a suspended license and issued a speeding ticket. The passenger was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 27-year-old Chicago man was arrested around 10:30 a.m. on March 28 in the area of Route 41 and Deerpath Road and charged with driving with a suspended license after he was pulled over for speeding. Police reported using radar to determine he was driving 84 mph in a 55 mph zone and issued him a speeding ticket.

A 28-year-old Waukegan man was arrested around 8 p.m. on March 28 and charged with driving without a valid license after he was pulled over for speeding in the area of Route 41 and Old Elm Road. Officers reported determining by radar that he was driving 93 mph in a 55 mph zone and also issued him a speeding ticket.

Pedro Cordova-Cantu, 24, of the 1000 block of North LeClaire Avenue, was arrested around 11 a.m. on March 29 and charged with driving under the influence and cited for transportation an open container of alcohol following an investigation into a two-car traffic crash in the area of Route 41 and Deerpath Road that left one of the cars in a ditch. Officers determined Cordova-Cantu, one of the drivers, was impaired and placed him under arrest.

Juan C. Soto, 26, of the 6500 block of North Western Avenue, Chicago, was arrested around 2 a.m. on March 31 and charged with two felony counts of aggravated driving under the influence, misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol, driving an uninsured motor vehicle and driving with a suspended license following an investigation into a traffic crash involving two cars in the area of Route 41 and Route 60. Police reported Soto was showing signs of being drunk, admitted driving multiple beers before driving and had a license that had been suspended as a result of previous DUI arrests.

Luis Sanchez-Figueroa, 36, of the 2100 block of Rugen Road, Glenview, was arrested at 1:10 a.m. on April 1 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and issued a citation for driving the wrong way following a traffic stop on Route 41 at Old Elm Road. An officer noticed a Jeep driven by Sanchez-Figueroa turn left from Westleigh Road into a northbound lane of Route 41 and drive south. The officer was able to catch up to the Jeep, pulled it over in Highland park and noticed right away the driver appeared drunk. After some field sobriety tests, Sanchez-Figueroa was placed under the arrest. He later refused to submit a breath sample.

A 34-year-old Chicago man was pulled over around 2:15 a.m. on April 3 after an officer reported clocking him going 72 mph in a 55 mph zone in the area of Route 41 and Deerpath Road. The driver was issued citations for possession of cannabis, possession of drug paraphernalia and speeding.

JoAnne Springer, 65, of the 200 block of White Branch Court, Buffalo Grove, was arrested around 5:30 a.m. on April 3 after officers reported witnessing her crash a SUV into wires and drive up a sidewalk. Police were dispatched to a report of a green Honda CRV heading north on Sheridan Road in the southbound lanes near Westleigh Road. Officers encountered the SUV in the 400 block of Illinois Road, where they watched it drive off the road, through a ditch and into the support wires for a utility pole before driving up the sidewalk. Police were able to get it to stop and spoke to the driver, later identified as Springer. While speaking about her driver, officers noticed she had an open wound on her head and fresh damaged to the car. Police reported she explained she had been trying to drive to Highland Park Hospital when she hit her head and called an ambulance. A breath test indicated she had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.239, nearly three times the legal limit. She was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more and without insurance. Officers also issued her citations for driving on the sidewalk and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Akira J. Taylor, 27, of the 500 block of George Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 8:15 p.m. on April 5 and charged with driving without a valid license, without insurance and obstruction for giving a false name after a traffic stop in the area of Waukegan Road and Coventry. Police reported she was pulled over because of an equipment violation and gave officers a fake name and birthday. They eventually identified her and found she did not have a valid license but had an active warrant from another state.

A 44-year-old North Chicago woman was arrested around 1 a.m. on April 9 in the area of Route 41 and Gage and charged with driving with a suspended license following a traffic stop for an equipment violation.

Robert Frechette, 50, of the 500 block of Smith Avenue, Lake Bluff, was arrested around 6:38 p.m. on April 9 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or more following an investigation into a two-car crash in the area of Waukegan Road and Route 176. Police reported he rear-ended another car stopped at a light and was arrested after showing signs of impairment. A breath test indicated his blood alcohol concentration was 0.24, three times the legal limit.

A 21-year-old Markham woman, a 21-year-old Chicago woman and three female juveniles from Markham and Chicago were taken into custody around 2 p.m. on April 13 by Lake Forest police. State police reported a stolen vehicle had just fled from a traffic stop in the area of Route 60 and the Illinois Tollway, and officers found the stolen vehicle in the 400 block of Saunders Road after a witness reported seeing the vehicle parked, seeing several female occupants get out and walk around an under-construction house and the sound of gunfire in the area. Four people were taken into custody at the scene and taken to the station, where officers learned all five people were wanted for questioning in connection with several reported shoplifting incidents in Schaumburg and Pleasant Prairie where more than $5,000 worth of merchandise had been stolen. The stolen van was released to Illinois State Police. The woman and girls were interviewed by multiple agencies and released without any Lake Forest charges, although they face potential criminal charges from Schaumburg, Pleasant Prairie and Illinois State Police.

Melissa Huizar, 24, of the 3000 block of Sunset Avenue, Waukegan, was arrested around 4:30 a.m. on April 14 and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving under the influence of alcohol with a blood alcohol concentration greater than 0.08 following a traffic stop on Route 41. An officer on patrol noticed an erratic driver and pulled it over. While speaking with the driver, Huizar, the officer smelled booze on her and noticed her showing signs of being drunk. Huizar was placed under arrest following field sobriety tests and taken to the public safety building where she provided a breath sample indicating a blood alcohol concentration of 0.132, nearly twice the legal limit.
