Adam Shreve, her 39-year-old husband, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead in the emergency room, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Steve Newton.

"At this point it is believed that a domestic incident occurred, which resulted in the off-duty officer shooting her husband," Interim Waukegan Police Chief Keith Zupec said Monday in a release.

Zupec said the officer has been cooperative with authorities. She has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of an Illinois State Police investigation into the incident, according to the chief.

Newton said the preliminary results of an autopsy conducted Monday indicate he died as a result of a gunshot wound to the chest.
