Edward Hamming, 72, Lake Forest

Celebration of Life to be held Saturday, October 22nd at 1:00pm at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest.

Dr. Edward G. Hamming, MD, age 72, of Lake Forest, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on September 25 after a long battle with cancer. Dr. Hamming was born in Moline, Illinois, and grew up in Rock Island. His father, Dr. Edward Hamming, was a college professor and head of the Geography Department at Augustana College in Rock Island. His mother, Marie Strating Hamming, was a junior high math teacher. Ed attended Rock Island High School before attending Augustana College, graduating Phi Beta Kappa, cum laude, in 1972. Ed met his wife, Nancy, at Augustana, married in 1972 and recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. Both Ed and Nancy graduated from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1976. Ed completed a 5-year residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Northwestern and then joined a practice in Waukegan, Illinois. His brother Bruce Hamming MD, joined him in the practice, followed years later by his sons, David Hamming, MD, and Mark Hamming, MD, as well as numerous other partners. Their practice was one of the founding groups in Illinois Bone & Joint, Inc. During his years of practice, Dr. Hamming served as President of St. Therese Medical Center Staff in Waukegan. He was also on staff until his retirement at Lake Forest Hospital, Vista Medical Center, and Condell Medical Center.

Dr. Hamming served in many volunteer roles, including two terms of service as an Elder at First
Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest. He was also on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls
Club of Waukegan.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Anderson Hamming, MD, as well as son, Dr. David Hamming (Dr. Katherine), Dr. Mark Hamming (Dr. Lesley), and Lisa Hamming Nyhan (Daniel). Ed was blessed with the joy of 9 grandchildren — Thomas, Henry, Emily, Molly (children of Dave & Katherine), George, Hugh, and Anders (children of Mark and Lesley), and Anna and Jack (children of Lisa and Daniel). He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Bruce Hamming (Mary).

In addition to his work and family activities, Ed loved participating in many sports and outdoor
challenges. He loved hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, golfing, waterskiing, hunting, fly fishing, and
spectator sports (especially watching his children and grandchildren).

Dr. Hamming was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Edward and Marie Hamming. A celebration of life memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, 700 N. Sheridan
Rd., Lake Forest, IL on October 22, at 1:00 pm.
