The federal government provides financial support to and regulates much of agriculture. Should they be doing more or less about food labeling, food safety, research and development, and animal management? What about herbicide overuse, GMOs, antibiotics, confined animal feeding operations, corporate farms, and farm subsidies? Are farmers being helped or hindered by the federal government?

Our local governmental bodies favor more locally grown food. Lake County government wants to strengthen the local sustainable food system, because of its quality of life, environmental, and economic benefits. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning believes communities should include a local food ordinance in their comprehensive plans. And one of its priority recommendations to municipalities is to foster local food systems. Lake Forest's strategic plan encourages more local and sustainable farming. Lake Bluff has enjoyed its farmer's market for 21 years.
