WAUKEGAN, IL — A hit-and-run driver struck and killed a pedestrian Saturday in Waukegan, police said. Shortly after 12:30 a.m., police and fire department personnel were dispatched to the 2400 block of Washington Street, where a man was found lying in the street in serious condition. Paramedics took him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that morning, according to Waukegan police.

Investigators believe a black sedan was speeding eastbound on Washington Street when it struck the victim, later identified as 53-year-old Waukegan resident Michael Walton. Police said no further vehicle description was available.

Witnesses described hearing a "very loud exhaust," according to a release from Waukegan Police Chief Wayne Walles. The Lake County Coroner conducted an autopsy Monday, which indicated Walton's death was caused by being struck by a motor vehicle.
