Lake Forest Country Day School Special Speaker Series Continues with Dr. Ned Hallowell

The New York Times Bestselling Author Offers Parenting Advice in an Ultrafast World

On Wednesday, October 21 at 10:00 a.m., Lake Forest Country Day School (LFCDS) welcomes Dr. Ned Hallowell, author of Driven to Distraction and Answers to Distraction, who will speak on “The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness,” while offering groundbreaking advice on raising happy children in an ultra-competitive society. Dr. Hallowell is a world-renowned ADHD expert, child psychiatrist and nationally-acclaimed author.

Lake Forest Country Day School places an emphasis on rigorous academic and social emotional learning as the centerpiece of student education. “Sometimes people have the mistaken notion that focusing on social-emotional learning comes at the expense of academics, when in actuality, it serves to dramatically amplify a child’s success as a student,” says Head of School Bob Whelan. Mr. Whelan notes that scores for students with social-emotional instruction are 11% higher than those of students without this training.

To address these compelling statistics, LFCDS launched the Special Speaker Series, which brought Dr. Michael Thompson, author of Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys to the school earlier this month. More than 250 area parents and educators attended Dr. Thompson’s lecture on how to help children navigate stress in order to succeed in school and in life. Dr. Hallowell, a graduate of Harvard University and the founder of The Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health, is the second speaker in the series.
