Lake Forest Obituary: William Rice Odell III
An accomplished journalist, William grew up in Lake Forest and attended Lake Forest Country Day School.

William Rice Odell III was born on August 19, 1928 to William Rice Odell II and Frances Robbins Odell. He was born and raised in Lake Forest, Illinois, where his parents lived for over 50 years. Rice lived in Lake Forest for about 20 years, and attended Lake Forest Country Day School. He went on to study Journalism at Stanford University, and served in the military in Vienna. He moved to Washington, D.C., raised a family, and wrote for The Washington Daily News and was the Editor for The Conservation Foundation newsletter. Rice was the author of “The Saving of San Francisco Bay,” “Environmental Awakening,” “The New Revolution to Protect the Earth,” and co-authored with Barbara Rodes “A Dictionary of Environmental Quotations.” He raised a family in Washington, D.C. and was an avid hockey and tennis player, private investigator, atheist, sailor, a lover of jazz and poetry, and scrabble. He is survived by his partner Ann Morales, his children, Colin and Denise, brother Henry Odell and sister Audrey Erickson, Sheila Odell and many other family members.
