Metra Train Strikes Car, Breaks Down In Lake Forest

A Union Pacific North Line train suffered a mechanical failure after "bumping" the rear of a car and sending its driver to the hospital.

LAKE FOREST, IL — A train struck a car before suffering a mechanical failure Saturday in Lake Forest, authorities said.

Shortly before 5 p.m., an outbound Metra train hit the rear of a vehicle that was partially encroaching on the tracks, according to a Metra spokesperson. The locomotive itself then broke down, leading to major delays on the Union Pacific North Line.

Lake Forest police said the driver of the vehicle was taken to the hospital. As of about 7 p.m., police were investigating the circumstances of the crash and speaking to witnesses, while railroad staff were checking tracks for any damage and working on restoring the train's operation.
