Featured obituary:

Nancy Mae Duguid née Larson, daughter of Harold and Mherae Larson née Frydenlund, passed away peacefully on July 31, 2018. Nancy was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, on December 17, 1930. She was a graduate of Albert Lea High School and matriculated to Gustavus Adolphus College for one year and eventually graduated with a physical education B.A. degree from the University of Minnesota in 1952.

Her work, before marriage, included student teaching in Watertown, South Dakota, taking masters-level classes at the University of Colorado, and ultimately teaching Junior High P.E. to girls in Wheaton. While teaching in Illinois, she was introduced to William A. Duguid, Jr. They had a whirlwind romance and engagement, and on July 2, 1955, Nancy and Bill married at Trinity Lutheran Church on perhaps the hottest day of the year in Albert Lea, Minnesota. They initially resided in Warrenville and three years later moved to Lake Forest, where Duguid resided for the remainder of her life.

Nancy lived her life as a passionate and loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Nancy’s family was always her main priority: her devotion and love for them was immeasurable. Nancy and Bill had four children; tragically their second son, Timmy, was diagnosed with EB, an incurable skin disease, and passed away at 16 months old.

She was a lifelong Lutheran and she and Bill were members of Zion Lutheran Church in Deerfield since 1959. For over 25 years, they both sang in the church choir together. She served on numerous committees and devoted hours of her time in support of Zion and her church family and community. Nancy played in the Monday night church bowling league for nearly 40 years and had several games over 200. She was a favorite to have on your team.

She enjoyed sewing for herself, her daughter, and her friends. She also knitted beautiful afghans, sweaters, and scarves and for several years worked at the Little Wool Shoppe located at Market Square in downtown Lake Forest. Nancy and Bill enjoyed playing bridge monthly with their close couple’s group. She also enjoyed flower gardening and especially entertaining her family and friends. The annual New Year’s Eve party at the Duguids’ was the most festive and fun party in town. In 1985, Nancy and Bill renovated the former Glen Rowan coach house and stable into a beautiful three-bedroom home. Nancy had a flair for design and loved to decorate her home with a mix of Scandinavian design and classic lines. Bill and Nancy loved to travel and would often bring back beautiful pieces of artwork from the many places they visited.

For many years, Nancy and Bill enjoyed a season ticket package to day games for the Chicago Cubs. After Bill’s death in 2003, she was able to go to a winning playoff game in the fall. But alas, it took another 13 years before Nancy could enjoy the moment when her beloved Cubs finally won the coveted World Series in October of 2016. Though a Minnesota transplant, she grew to love the Cubs in the mid-60s and stayed a fan her whole life.

Nancy’s generosity and dedication were a blessing to many. She volunteered often at the church. While the kids were in school, she served on many committees at Lake Forest High School. Nancy and Bill loved to watch LFHS sports, especially when their boys were playing both soccer and baseball. As her grandsons grew up, she particularly enjoyed following their activities and interests such as football, baseball, lacrosse, choir concerts, marching band, show choir, jazz band, and school musicals.

Nancy was preceded in death by her loving husband William A. Jr., her son, Timothy Alan, her parents, Harold and Mae Larson, and her brother, Alan Larson. Nancy leaves behind her cherished family of three children, Matthew (Jane) of Stratham, New Hampshire, Julie (Jack) Stephen of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Peter (Tammy) of Libertyville; six grandsons, Stephen (Sarah), Nathaniel, James, Jake, John, and Daniel; and one great-granddaughter, Olivia.
