Parolee Goes to Jail After Taking a Swing at a Cop in Candy Sale Incident

Police confronted Shevell Shelton after a business complained the Gurnee man and 2 boys were aggressively selling candy without a permit.

LAKE FOREST, IL—A Chicago man on parole was arrested after trying to punch a police officer responding to complaints of zelous candy sellers, according to reports.

Shevell C. Shelton, 29, of the 7600 block of South Lawrence Avenue, Chicago, was confronted by Lake Forest police May 3 after a business owner in the 600 block of Bank Lane complained Shelton and two male juveniles were selling candy without a city permit in an aggressive fashion, police say.

When police spoke to the trio, Shelton tried to flee by punching an officer, the report stated. As he was taken in to custody, police noticed Shelton was wearing an ankle monitor that was part of the terms of his parole for a previous arrest. His parole also stipulated that he was to remain under house arrest at his home in Chicago.

Shelton was arrested and charged with aggravated assault and resisting a peace officer. He was taken to Lake County Jail, where he stayed after pleading guilty, according to the police report.

The two male juveniles, who police said were cooperative, were cited for solicitation violations and released to their parents.
