East End Spring Shopping and Music

When: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30

Where: East End of Metra, 1700 St. Johns Ave.

What: Check out offerings from local restaurants and boutiques. Live music from The Love―Beatles Tribute Band and the Highland Park High School DJ Club will begin at noon Saturday, April 30.

LAKE FOREST

Ragdale's 10th Annual Novel Affair

When: 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 29, and 6:30 p.m. Saturday, April 30

Where: Home of Sandy and Roger Deromedi, 900 E. Illinois Road

What: This event brings together renowned authors and artists for two evenings of creativity and conversation in support of Ragdale, the artists’ retreat in Lake Forest. This year features founding authors Jane Hamilton, Anne LeClaire and Gail Tsukiyama, as well as Thomas Cook, Charles Finch, Casey Sherman, Lisa Genova, Aleksandar Hemon, Jacquelyn Mitchard and Kat Falls.

43rd Annual Ice Show, Gotta Dance!

When: 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, and Saturday, April 30, and 2 p.m. Sunday, May 1

Where: Glenview Ice Center, 1851 Landwehr Road

What: The annual show features skaters from the ice center's figure skating and hockey programs. Tickets are $8.

National Independent Bookstore Day

When: 9 a.m. Saturday, April 30

Where: The Book Stall, 811 Elm St.

What: Authors Renee Rosen, Cory Franklin, Mike Leonard, Libby Hellmann, Jamie Freveletti, Laurence Gonzales, Rebecca Makkai and Mitch Rogatz will help celebrate the day at the book store. There also will be a bookseller bake-off, poetry booth and reading, snacks, games, balloons, henna tattooing and more.

WINNETKA

Bike Sale

When: 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 30

Where: Winnetka Community House,

What: Sell you bicycle or have it appraised at the community house's annual event. A representative from Wilmette Bicycle Show also will be on hand to evaluate bikes. A 25 percent service charge on sales will go to the community house. The event will happen rain or shine.

DEERFIELD

Deer Dash 10K, 5K and 1-Mle Fun Run

When: 7 to 10 a.m. Sunday, May 1

Where: Jaycee Park, 1050 Wilmot Road

What: No matter what kind of runner you are, you'll probably be able to find a race to compete in at the Deer Dash.
