Mom's Boyfriend Charged In Death Of Girl, 4

WAUKEGAN, IL — A 19-year-old man has been charged with aggravated battery of a child for allegations he physically abused a 4-year-old girl who died early Sunday. Authorities said Johnathan Fair, who is the boyfriend of the 4-year-old’s mother, is being held on a $5 million bond at the Lake County Jail in connection with Skylar Mendez’s death, which has been ruled a homicide, according to Waukegan police.

The girl’s mother and Fair took Mendez to Vista Medical Center Thursday night and initially said the 4-year-old girl suffered a head injury at their Waukegan apartment, according to the article. Authorities later determined the girl had been abused, police said.

Fair is next expected in court on Jan. 9.
