LAKE FOREST, IL — The 100th anniversary of the "War to End All Wars" is Sunday. It has been a national holiday since Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Originally known as Armistice Day, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance in 1926. President Eisenhower in 1954 signed an amendment renaming it Veterans Day and expand it to honor all veterans. This year it falls on Sunday, Nov. 11.

The Lake Forest Civic Orchestra is performing a "Salute to Veterans" concert Sunday at 4 p.m. at the John and Nancy Hughes Theatre at the Gorton Community Center at 400 E. Illinois Road in Lake Forest. All veterans and their immediate family members were invited free of charge.

In honor of both the armistice centennial and the Illinois bicentennial, the concert will feature Copland's Lincoln Portrait, Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, and Vaughan Williams' Symphony No. 3, a "hauntingly magnificent" piece written after serving in World War I. Read more...
